The OS needs at least 2 GB of space, but TrueNAS infrequently reads or writes to the OS disk. The Fractal Design Node 304 Black is a mini-ITX case with space for six disks. I settled on the AMD Athlon 3000G. At only $105, it’s a good value, it supports Radeon graphics, and it has decent CPU benchmarks. ZFS can protect you against disk failure, but there are many threats to your data that ZFS won’t mitigate, such as accidental deletion, malware, or physical theft. I use restic to replicate everything important to encrypted cloud backups. Fortunately, my old Synology recovered after I cleaned it out and reseated the disks, but it was an important wake-up call.
I had to upgrade manually by downloading the files and loading them on a thumb drive. Although my old Synology managed to outshine TrueNAS on reads, this was not the case for writes. Even on an unencrypted volume, TrueNAS was 77% faster on small files, and the two systems performed similarly on 1 GiB files. For unencrypted volumes, I was surprised to see my rusty, 7-year-old Synology outperform my shiny, new TrueNAS build.

Seagate IronWolf NAS drives are specifically designed for use inside an always-on server. They range from 1TB to 16TB in size, so it's possible to configure enough capacity for your needs. When it comes to RAM in a NAS, you only really need to pay attention to speed and capacity. We selected a Crucial Vengeance 16GB kit that should be more than enough for most NAS-related tasks, including some streaming.
My NAS centers on a Gigabyte E350N motherboard, equipped with an AMD E-350 processor. I picked this motherboard because it’s small, it draws little power, and it can fit into small spaces, yet it offers four SATA ports for my hard drives. I took the average of three trials over both encrypted volumes and unencrypted volumes. When I got all the components installed, the system powered on, but there was no video display. This is the first system I’ve ever built that doesn’t expose the back face of the PSU outside of the case. Instead, the case has a short NEMA extension cable that routes the internal PSU to the case’s own external power input. ZFS requires you to reflash the HBA’s firmware in a process that sounds tedious and confusing. The ASUS A320I-K has four SATA ports, which is enough for my initial needs.
Rather than buying a pre-made NAS or attempting to use your router as a NAS, you can always buy a network-attached drive enclosure. These are dedicated NAS devices with the appropriate server software, designed to be connected to a network. You’ll need to buy an appropriate hard drive separately and insert them into the NAS to get the storage you’ll need to use it. Even if you don’t have a physical keyboard or screen, ILO can be used to create a server. You can install a virtual machine on your workstation, booting Ubuntu from a live image, and installing Ubuntu on a USB hard drive.
Do I Need A Nas At Home?
Make sure it fits your case, fits the processor you choose and has enough SATA ports to handle the hard drives you want to connect. Motherboards built today typically support the features that are most useful, like boot-from-USB and wake-on-LAN. Double check the manufacturer’s website before if you’re feeling paranoid. For our reasonably priced build, we selected Seagate IronWolf. It's always recommended to pair up hard drives in a RAID configuration, just in case something goes wrong, causing your drive to fail — you don't want to lose everything stored on the NAS. Factoring this into account, two 2TB drives in a RAID configuration would offer 2TB of capacity.
Step 1: Installing FreeNAS
Wired not Wireless – Always hard wire the NAS with an Ethernet cable. Do NOT use a wireless signal, it simply won’t be reliable enough for the NAS to operate smoothly. More Expensive when Upgrading Components – Unfortunately, upgrading computer components isn’t a cheap task.
I definitely suggest using identical, red, NAS hard drives in a NAS enclosure or computer being used as a media server. I recommend either the Seagate Iron Wolf NAS HDD or Western Digital Red NAS HDD. Below is a comparison chart of the 2TB model from both Seagate and WD. Without getting too complicated, there are two raid configurations applicable to most NAS enclosures and computers for media servers. Cheaper if using a Repurposed Computer – A lot of people have switched from using typical desktop computers to laptops.
Many types of back-up software can back up directly to the network storage. As FreeNAS is starting up, it will present lots of arcane lines of code, followed by a numbered list and a Web address to connect to. Type that address into a browser on a computer in your home that’s connected to the same network as the NAS, and you’ll reach the FreeNAS configuration screen. As Windows became easier to use with network attached devices, and hardware prices fell, this term started to be used in the consumer market.
A NAS enclosure’s operating system will likely have an “app store” with various apps to install. The most popular media server application for a NAS enclosure is likely Plex Media Server. You will need to pay a yearly fee for access on all devices, but it’s definitely worth it.
